This book was released on 2003 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 12th volume in the series of guides to archival sources related to British history. This volume identifies and briefly describes the papers of 1,300 British antiquaries, historians, genealogists, heralds, archaeologists and others working from the mid 15th century to the late 20th century, with a focus on the more significant and substantial collections. Each entry gives details of the personal papers of that individual (including incoming letters, working papers and drawings) remaining in their possession at the time of their death. It excludes papers or correspondence created in an official capacity, as such papers would usually be contained in the archive of the institution concerned.

Download or read book Property of a Gentleman written by Robin Myers and published by St. Paul's Bibliographies. This book was released on 1996 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of the first edition. Part of the Publishing Pathways Series. The history of private libraries is hard to write. With the books themselves today almost invariably dispersed or absorbed into large institutional collections, they only occasionally achieve coherent visibility. The libraries must be reconstructed using a variety of means, with lists, bookplates, shelf marks, binders' records, owner's markings and contemporary correspondence all playing a part. More often than not the only access we have is through an auction catalogue, appearing like a meteor at the moment of a collection's dissolution; but such catalogues, the by-product of a commercial process rather than a careful record, are often tantalizing and enigmatic in the evidence they offer. This collection of essays by leading specialists in the field, some with extensive auction-house experience, reveals how a variety of collectors at different periods set about amassing their libraries, what they acquired, how they organized, catalogued and displayed them, and the means by which their books came to be dispersed. Download or read book Chinese Art and Its Encounter with the World written by David Clarke and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Art and Its Encounter with the Worldexamines Chinese art from the mid-eighteenth century to the present, beginning with discussion of a Chinese portrait modeler from Canton who traveled to London in 1769, and ending with an analysis of art and visual culture in post-colonial Hong Kong. By means of a series of six closely-focused case studies, often deliberately introducing non-canonical or previously marginalized aspects of Chinese visual culture, it analyzes Chinese art's encounter with the broader world, and in particular with the West. Offering more than a simple charting of influences, it uncovers a pattern of richly mutual interchange between Chinese art and its others. Arguing that we cannot fully understand modern Chinese art without taking this expanded global context into account, it attempts to break down barriers between areas of art history which have hitherto largely been treated within separate and often nationally-conceived frames. Aware that issues of cultural difference need to be addressed by art historians as much as by artists, it represents a pioneering attempt to produce art historical writing which is truly global in approach. David Clarkeis Professor in the Department of Fine Arts, University of Hong Kong.
