Book The State of Scholarly Publishing

Download or read book The State of Scholarly Publishing written by Harold Laski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, university presses and other scholarly and professional publishers in the United States played a pivotal role in the transmission of scholarly knowledge. Their books and journals became the "gold standard" in many academic fields for tenure, promotion, and merit pay. Their basic business model was successful, since this diverse collection of presses had a unique value proposition. They dominated the scholarly publishing field with preeminent sales in three major markets or channels of distribution: libraries and institutions; college and graduate school adoptions; and general readers (i.e., sales to general retailers).Yet this insulated world changed abruptly in the late 1990s. What happened? This book contains a superb series of articles originally published in The Journal of Scholarly Publishing, by some of the best experts on scholarly communication in the western hemisphere, Europe, Asia, and Africa. These authors analyze in depth the diverse and exciting challenges and opportunities scholars, universities, and publishers face in what is a period of unusual turbulence in scholarly publishing. The topics given attention include: copyrights, the transformation of scholarly publishing from a print format to a digital one, open access, scholarly publishing in emerging nations, problems confronting journals, and information on how certain academic disciplines are coping with the transformation of scholarly publishing. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the scholarly publishing industry's past, its current focus, or future plans and developments.

Download or read book Research Reference Service and Resources for the Study of Africa written by Deborah Lafond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts present proven methods and techniques for studying about or in Africa! Research, Reference Services, and Resources for the Study of Africa helps you steer clear of washouts, cave-ins, and dead ends on the road to successful research on—or in—Africa. This one-of-a-kind research guide presents practical solutions to frequently occurring problems in the study of Africa, including Internet accessibility problems, errors that will affect a “known item” search, the imposition of colonial legacy, and dealing with gender and class bias. Unlike most references on Africa that concentrate on collection development, this unique book focuses on the study of Africa, making it a must-have for academic librarians, Africanist scholars, and Africana librarians. Specialists, generalist librarians, and end users all depend on tools designed to provide access to information in libraries and on the web including OPACs databases, and search engines. In this book, these tools, research methods, and the accessibility of information on Africa are examined, offering students and professionals a thorough guide to the most successful researching route. Research, Reference Services, and Resources for the Study of Africa provides assistance in the research process according to a variety of categories including: evaluating OPACs and similar databases for known-item searching using keywords, subject headings, bias, indexing, full-text searching, terminology, cataloguing, user-centered information services, and other search strategies to find what you are looking for using Internet resources to your advantage using the partnerships between the U.S. and African libraries and scholarly institutions to help improve information access using techniques for reference librarians to act as a force increasing women’s roles in the study of Africa and much more! Research, Reference Services, and Resources for the Study of Africa offers all the information necessary to avoid research hang-ups that affect the study of Africa, and the necessary information to pass these skills on to students.

Book African Womanhood and the Feminist Agenda

Download or read book African Womanhood and the Feminist Agenda written by Musingafi, Maxwell Constantine Chando and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within academic circles, there is a longstanding issue concerning the portrayal and understanding of African womanhood. Frequently, these narratives are crafted by outsiders, predominantly Western scholars, often distorting the lived experiences and unique perspectives of African women. This has led to a skewed and sometimes negative perception of African women, reinforcing stereotypes, and sidelining their voices in critical discussions. Moreover, this misrepresentation has real-world consequences, as it impacts social justice initiatives and development projects that rely on misguided narratives rather than the authentic voices of African women. African Womanhood and the Feminist Agenda emerges as an essential solution to the misrepresentation of African women. This comprehensive and meticulously researched book offers an alternative narrative, one that is rooted in African perspectives and experiences. It addresses the historical, cultural, and political dimensions of African womanhood, providing a rich and nuanced understanding of this multifaceted topic.

Book Promoting Gender Equity in Selected Public Universities of Kenya

Download or read book Promoting Gender Equity in Selected Public Universities of Kenya written by Jane Onsongo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2011 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine sustainable gender equity interventions in selected public universities. The study used descriptive survey and case study research methods to carry out an in-depth analysis of the gender equity interventions in selected public universities in Kenya. The sample consisted of four public universities that were selected because they had established gender centers/institutes that were assumed to be coordinating gender equity intervention. The study has the following objectives: To establish the existing gender inequalities in the formal organisational structure of the selected universities; To identify and assess sustainability of gender equity interventions in the selected public universities; To analyse the national, regional, international and organisational culture and policy contexts that have influenced and supported the introduction of the identified gender equity interventions; To investigate the attitudes of staff, students and management towards the gender equity interventions; and to recommend appropriate institutional strategies to address existing gender inequities.
