Book excerpt: A successor to "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes in Blue," this guide provides law enforcement officers across the spectrum with a guide to combating the stressors inevitably tied to this career. Your mental, physical, spiritual, and social well-being all work together to create all-around wellness. When one of these elements is suffering because of stress or negative influences, then your health, your outlook on life, and your ability to serve are all impaired. As law enforcement officers, we spend far more time than we should in the "fight or flight" state, and even though this is central to the experience, you can still prepare for and/or alleviate the effects of this prolonged alertness with the right strategies.

It contains a wealth of advice on making it through field training, life survival, safety tips, and much more. It features snippets of valuable insight from several experts and law enforcement veterans such as psychologist Dr. Katherine Kuhlman who appears on national media to discuss mental health in law enforcement. Police Chief Neil Gang, a renowned keynote speaker and creator of the "Asher Model" for Officer Wellness, also imparts some of his wisdom. The author has been through a lot and has also included personal awareness methods not dealt with in detail in law enforcement training. Written in an easy, conversational style, this manual is a must-read whether you are newly graduated from a police academy or are a seasoned officer, the author ensures that there is something for everyone to relate to and take on board.

Book Truths Beyond The Police Academy

Download or read book Truths Beyond The Police Academy written by Scott Medlin and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of the books "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes In Blue" and "101 Health Tips For Police Officers" that is perfect not just for police officers but also for the future recruits. This is not to say, "Forget everything you learned in the academy!" Why would anyone advise that? Elements of criminal law and how to work your weapon and handcuffs among the other things you learn are extremely crucial for your safety and security. "This profession can chew you up and spit you out," said Police Chief N. Gang in a conversation I had with him recently. Did I mention he has been in law enforcement for over 30 years! Beyond the undeniably crucial skills we gather from the police academy, is a human being, you! While emphasizing and combining the concepts discussed in "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes In Blue" and "101 Health Tips For Police Officers", this book endeavors to capture the silent thieves, taking time to deal with the pebble in the shoe. Back in rookie school (2007) and as of the writing of this book, there has been little to no mention of financial freedom, or how to cope with on-the-job stress or exposure to trauma. This book is your first step toward taking better care of yourself so you can ultimately be the hero for those who call 911. Strive for wellness, success, and happiness with the strategies in this field manual.

Download or read book DYING FOR THE JOB written by John M. Violanti and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one thinks of police work, the immediate danger of this occupation comes to mind—the everyday threat of violence, death, and witnessing traumatic events in their work. Less noted however is the physical and psychological danger associated with police work, including harmful environmental exposure, stress and trauma. Based on research, the adverse health and psychological consequences of this occupation far outweigh the dangers of the street. The primary purpose of this book is therefore to focus on these less known, less talked about dangers in policing. The mental well-being, health, and average life span of police officers appear to be affected by these factors. Hence, the title –“dying for the job”—reflects not so much the danger on the street but the hidden health dangers associated with policing. Many of the researchers who contributed to this book are epidemiologists and biostatisticians who are part of a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) CDC five-year research study on police health titled “BCOPS”—the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress study. Still other contributors are experts in cancer, cardiovascular disease and psychological trauma. Recent events such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Sandy Hook school tragedy, and the Boston Marathon bombings emphasize the need to have a vibrant, healthy police force. It is necessary to maintain a high level of reliability by initiating health and stress prevention efforts. Chapters include: an examination of harmful physical work exposures; health disparities among police officers; cardiovascular risk in law enforcement; risk of cancer incidence and mortality among police officers; shift work and health consequences in policing; stressors and associated health effects for women police officers; suicide; post-traumatic stress disorder; resilience in policing; and PTSD symptoms, psychobiology, and coexisting disorders in police officers. Both law enforcement practitioners and administrators alike will benefit from reading this book.

Book Law Enforcement Based Psychology 101

Download or read book Law Enforcement Based Psychology 101 written by A. Tony Goings and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following course curriculum begins to unfold and describe the "true" nature of behavior, whether from a normal perspective or beginning to understand how and why abnormal behavior begins. Additionally, our attempt is to educate professionals to recognize signals and signs associated with mental illness or even others under the influence of substance consumed, smoked or inhaled. We do not suggest the provided material is intended to diagnose mental illness by no means at all. Our hope is providing information which allows professionals to cue into abnormality commonly approached and use different tools to help a person in crises. Overall, law enforcement becomes the primary first responders to most incidents yet have limited training to recognize to adequately handle the situation. Officers are educated and schooled (trained) to contain and control, using direct orders, and anticipating instantaneous conformity and compliance. Officers do not have the appropriate or adequate training to recognize or deal with the intellectually disordered (mentally ill). Based on this, they are not receptive of or responsive to the fact that, authoritative presence has taken (easily) causes an intellectually disordered (mentally ill) individual to become defensive. Officers are educated and schooled in the mindset of stop, freeze, and do not move; devoid of any other alternative or option left (no way out) to or for the subject. Often progressing towards, "do as I say or else." Based on their collaborative experience, the authors of this curriculum truly deem that, with additional training, a perceived non-compliant individual, may actually be an intellectually disordered (mentally ill) individual necessitating (requiring) a different approach, patience, empathy, understanding, and most importantly, particular words that the subject can relate too. In order to achieve this, it is essential that the officers are trained in becoming familiar with and recognizing the difference amid, a) normal behavior, and b) abnormal behavior. The community has little faith and trust in law enforcement's skills and yet despite the conflict; law enforcement continues confronting perilous situations day in and day out. Let's get real. The world is in a social war. Social media and the news highlight tragic incidents gone wrong at the hands of police.Secondly, we begin discussing cultural sensitivity and multicultural issues prevalent in today's policing. Before we get into the deep conversation we would like to take a short pause and address a serious social issue we feel is prevalent and worthy of in-depth discussion. What to do when you get stopped by the police.....
