Yet college can also be a time of personal testing and intense questioning— especially for Christian students confronted with various challenges to Christianity and the Bible for the first time. Drawing on years of experience as a biblical scholar, Michael Kruger addresses common objections to the Christian faith—the exclusivity of Christianity, Christian intolerance, homosexuality, hell, the problem of evil, science, miracles, and the reliability of the Bible. Book Faith and Place

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark R. Wynn
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2009-05-07
  • ISBN : 0191570028
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Faith and Place written by Mark R. Wynn and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith and Place takes knowledge of place as a basis for thinking about the relationship between religious belief and our embodied life. Recent epistemology of religion has appealed to various secular analogues for religious belief - especially analogues drawn from sense perception and scientific theory construction. These approaches tend to overlook the close connection between religious belief and our moral, aesthetic and otherwise engaged relationship to the material world. By taking knowledge of place as a starting point for religious epistemology, Mark Wynn aims to throw into clearer focus the embodied, action-orienting, perception-structuring, and affect-infused character of religious understanding. This innovative study understands the religious significance of a site in terms of i. its capacity to stand for some encompassing truth about human life; ii. its conservation of historical meanings, where these meanings make a practical claim upon those located at the place at later times; and iii. its directing of the believer's attention to a sacred meaning, through enacted appropriation of the site. Wynn proposes that the notion of 'God' functions like the notion of a 'genius loci', where the relevant locus is the sum of material reality. He argues that knowledge of God consists in part in a storied and sensuous appreciation of the significance of particular places.

Book Faith at the Intersection of History and Experience

Download or read book Faith at the Intersection of History and Experience written by Brent A. R. Hege and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This present study is the first in Engli Georg Wobbermin (1869-1943), who has been called a captain of the liberal rearguard. Widely read and discussed in his own lifetime, Wobbermin's theology fell into obscurity as dialectical theology rose to prominence in the years following the First World War. Faith at the Intersection of History and Experience presents the major themes of Wobbermin's theology, particularly his analysis of the relationship between faith and history and his development of a religio-psychological theological method that places faith at the intersection of history and experience. Wobbermin's critiques of recent and contemporary approaches to the problem of faith and history and his attention to theological method reveal a sustained effort to continue what he called the Luther-Kant-Schleiermacher line of Protestant theology. The consistent emphasis in Wobbermin's theology is on the systematic interrelation of objectivity and subjectivity, an approach he considered to be a faithful continuation of the Reformation, but one that invited conflict with the dialectical theologians, chiefly Karl Barth. Wobbermin's debates with Barth on issues of method reveal a vibrant and sophisticated liberal theology co-existing with the dialectical theology that is conventionally assumed to have eclipsed it over a decade earlier. Building on work that has been done primarily in German, this study of one of the forgotten theologians of the early twentieth century appears as more German, British, and American theologians and historians are returning to this period of theology with renewed interest and fresh questions, and it addresses an often neglected period of modern Protestant thought in histories currently available in English.
