Book excerpt: MY SHORT STORIES is a compilation of the many stories that have floated in and out of the author's mind for years. Some of the characters are based on people she has known who have impressed her or inspired her. Most are strictly from her vivid imagination. MY SHORT STORIES is the author's second book. The first one, MY TOW GRANDMOTHERS: EMMA AND SPARROW, while fiction, was based on tow very different family personalities who were important in the author's life. Most of these stories share poignancy and humor, a difficult combination sometimes, but as the author reveals, very true to life as we know and experience it. One example is the red haired girl in The Funeral. She is a delightful child similar to one that most readers have met. Characters like Starr from the story My Own Belle Starr show an admirable strength of character. Others, like the doctors in My Friend the Country Doctor, are people the reader will enjoy meeting. The Tale of a Tooth is a fantasy based on a read incident with a tooth, and it will bring a smile to the reader. In My Grandmother's Boarding House, Emma, a character from the first book, MY TWO GRANDMOTHERS: EMMA AND SPARROW appear again, but the house itself is an important character this time. Almost all the characters cause the reader to feel an intensity of emotions somewhere between pain and laughter.

Book Inclusive Character Analysis

Download or read book Inclusive Character Analysis written by Jennifer Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive Character Analysis foregrounds representations of race, gender, class, ability, and sexual orientation by blending script analysis with a variety of critical theories in order to create a more inclusive performance practice for the classroom and the stage. This book merges a traditional Stanislavski-based script analysis with multiple theoretical frameworks, such as gender theory, standpoint theory, and critical race theory, to give students in early level theatre courses foundational skills for analyzing a play, while also introducing them to contemporary thought about race, gender, and identity. Inclusive Character Analysis is a valuable resource for beginning acting courses, script analysis courses, the directing classroom, early design curriculum, dramaturgical explorations, the playwriting classroom, and introduction to performance studies classes. Additionally, the book offers a reader-style background on theoretical frames for performance faculty and practitioners who may need assistance to integrate non-performance centered theory into their classrooms.

Book The Writer s Guide to Character Traits

Download or read book The Writer s Guide to Character Traits written by Linda Edelstein and published by Writers Digest Books. This book was released on 1999-10-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped has long been considered a masterpiece of high adventure. In The Low Road, James Lear reinvents this classic as a satirical, queer, coming-of-age story. In 1705 Scotland, young Charles Gordon reaches adulthood ignorant of his family's heroic past in the Jacobite Rebellion. He sets out to discover the truth about his father, but instead is kidnapped by mercenaries and sold into slavery as the plaything of a group of corrupt military officials. But Charlie’s talents, in and out of bed, win him powerful friends as well as dangerous foes. The false priest, Lebecque, violent Captain Robert, depraved General Wilmott — all contribute to Charlie’s "education." Eventually leading a makeshift army of sex-crazed layabouts, Charlie faces the might of the English forces. Will he triumph, or is it better to retreat to the safety of his sybaritic lifestyle? James Lear expertly interweaves spies and counterspies, scheming servants and sadistic captains, tavern trysts and prison orgies, into this delightfully erotic work that can take its place alongside his acclaimed novels The Back Passage and Hot Valley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Millions of people have fallen in love with Auggie Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face—who shows us that kindness brings us together no matter how far apart we are. Read the book that inspired the Choose Kind movement, a major motion picture, and the critically acclaimed graphic novel White Bird. And don't miss R.J. Palacio's highly anticipated new novel, Pony, available now! I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse. August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Beginning from Auggie’s point of view and expanding to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others, the perspectives converge to form a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

Book Character Computing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alia El Bolock
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-01-01
  • ISBN : 303015954X
  • Pages : 173 pages

Download or read book Character Computing written by Alia El Bolock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction into the theory and practice of the transdisciplinary field of Character Computing, introduced by Alia El Bolock. The latest scientific findings indicate that “One size DOES NOT fit all” in terms of how to design interactive systems and predict behavior to tailor the interaction experience. Emotions are one of the essential factors that influence people’s daily experiences; they influence decision making and how different emotions are interpreted by different individuals. For example, some people may perform better under stress and others may break. Building upon Rosalind Picard’s vision, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions and how different characters perceive and react to these emotions, hence having richer and truly tailored interaction experiences. Psychological processes or personality traits are embedded in the existing fields of Affective and Personality Computing. However, this book is the first that systematically addresses this including the whole human character; namely our stable personality traits, our variable affective, cognitive and motivational states as well as our morals, beliefs and socio-cultural embedding. The book gives an introduction into the theory and practice of the transdisciplinary field of Character Computing. The emerging field leverages Computer Science and Psychology to extend technology to include the whole character of humans and thus paves the way for researchers to truly place humans at the center of any technological development. Character Computing is presented from three main perspectives: ● Profiling and sensing the character ● Leveraging characters to build ubiquitous character-aware systems ● Investigating how to extend Artificial Intelligence to create artificial characters

Book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time

Download or read book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time written by Mark Haddon and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling modern classic—both poignant and funny—narrated by a fifteen year old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbour’s dog Wellington impaled on a garden fork, and he is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer, and turns to his favourite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with the crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the workings of Christopher’s mind. And herein lies the key to the brilliance of Mark Haddon’s choice of narrator: The most wrenching of emotional moments are chronicled by a boy who cannot fathom emotions. The effect is dazzling, making for one of the freshest debut in years: a comedy, a tearjerker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.

Book The Affective Profiles Model

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume provides an up-to-date exploration of the affective profiles model, a person-centered means of understanding the affective system. It presents the etiology underpinning the affective system and compares the model with other existing personality models, such as the Big Five Model, and the Cloninger’s Biopsychosocial Model. Most important, it examines the affective profiles model in relation to well-being, which includes life satisfaction, as well as psycho-logical health. As such, it illuminates the problems of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Based on a wealth of longitudinal, cross-cultural and intervention studies, this book offers a critical view of the affective profiles model that will enrich both further research and clinical practice.
