Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author was one of many reluctant soldiers who served in the Vietnam War. Drafted out of graduate school and trained in the infantry, he spent a year with the 101st Airborne. This work is a journal of the experience, a day to day description of what it was like in a "grunt unit" fighting in the Central Highlands, dealing with the heat, the bugs, the rain, the endless patrolling in the villages and mountains, the ever present boredom and occasional violence. It's not all exciting action but it's always real.

Book Death in the A Shau Valley

Download or read book Death in the A Shau Valley written by Larry Chambers and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring a new introduction by the author about his return to Vietnam, his reflections on the war, and his humanitarian work in Cambodia. “The enemy had a single purpose: kill me and my teammates.” Larry Chambers was still new to Vietnam in early 1969 when the LRRPs of the 101st Airborne Division became L Company, 75th (Rangers). But his unit’s mission stayed the same: act as the eyes and ears of the 101st deep in the dreaded A Shau Valley—where the NVA ruled. Relentless thick fog frequently made fighter bombers useless in the A Shau, and the enemy had furnished the nearby mountaintops with antiaircraft machine guns to protect the massive trail network that snaked through it. So, outgunned, outmanned, and unsupported, the teams of L Company executed hundreds of courageous missions. Now, in this powerful personal record, Larry Chambers recaptures the experience of the war’s most brutal on-the-job training, where the slightest noise or smallest error could bring sudden—and certain—death. . . .

This book was released on 1969 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 19 July 1968 to 25 May 1969, the 101st Airborne Division underwent major transformations in organization, operational concepts and techniques, deployment of major elements and support concepts. The Division's area of operation, centered around the city of Hue, increased in size from an area 30 kilometers in length along the coast and ranging 40 kilometers inland toward the mountains to an area which now extends 108 kilometers in length along the coast and 70 kilometers deep to the Laotian border. Operations were conducted against the enemy's lines of communication and base areas in the mountains; initially, however, the Division focused primarily on the elimination of enemy forces in the coastal plains and the protection of population centers, allied lines of communications, key installations and the rice producing areas. With the virtual elimination of organized VC forces from the coastal plains through the combined efforts of the 101st Airborne Division, the 1st ARVN Division and Thua Thien Sector forces, the Division began to orient more and more on VC main force units and NVA in their base areas located in the mountainous jungle area adjacent to the Laotian border. This shift in operations was made possible by the significant improvement in the operational ability of the Regional and Popular forces to control the coastal plains and populated areas with only limited assistance from the Division.

Book excerpt: What's so special about 101st Airborne Division? In this new, compelling book from author Valeri Rodgers, find out more about 101st Airborne Division ...The 101st Airborne Division???the "Screaming Eagles"???is a U.S. Army modular light infantry division trained for air assault operations. During World War II, it was renowned for its role in Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944, in Normandy, France, Operation Market Garden, the liberation of Holland and action during the Battle of the Bulge around the city of Bastogne, Belgium. During the Vietnam War, the 101st Airborne Division fought in several major campaigns and battles including the fight for Hamburger Hill in May 1969.Upon its arrival in Vietnam in 1965, the division was an airborne unit. In mid-1968 it was reorganized and redesignated as an airmobile division, then in 1974 as an air assault division. Both of these titles reflect the fact that the division went from airplanes as the primary method of delivering troops into combat, to the use of helicopters as the way the division entered battle. Many current members of the 101st are graduates of the U.S. Army Air Assault School and wear the Air Assault Badge. Division headquarters is at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In recent years, the division has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The division is one of the most highly decorated units in the U.S. Army and has been featured prominently in military fiction since its first deployment. So, what seperates this book from the rest?A comprehensive narrative of 101st Airborne Division, this book gives a full understanding of the subject.A brief guide of subject areas covered in "101st Airborne Division -" include -- 101st Airborne Division- Mission Albany- Operation Market Garden- Siege of Bastogne- Vietnam War- Gulf War- War in Afghanistan (2001-present)- Operation Enduring Freedom- Iraq WarFind out more of this subject, it's intricacies and it's nuances. Book excerpt: “A thorough examination of Operation Lamar Plain from the point of view of the soldiers on the ground, particularly those of Sherwood’s company.” —ARMY Magazine Courage Under Fire is the first book published about Operation Lamar Plain. After 50 years, the story of the renowned 101st Airborne’s major offensive near Tam Ky, South Vietnam remains largely unknown. Fighting at Tam Ky by the 1st Brigade began 15 May 1969 while the 101st’s 3rd Brigade battled on Hamburger Hill. The political consequences of Hamburger Hill’s high casualties caused Lamar Plain and its high casualties to remain classified and undisclosed. Decades later, the fighting at Tam Ky is mostly forgotten except by those who fought there. Sherwood’s superb research of now declassified records uncovers how such a large battle could remain hidden and undisclosed. But that is not the heart of his story. His focus is on the courage and commitment of the young infantry soldiers who fought. Courage Under Fire uses actual battle records and eyewitness accounts to follow “Never Quit” Delta Company and its sister companies through 28 days of continuous combat at Tam Ky. Delta Company’s soldiers lived up to their motto despite increasing casualties, a tough enemy, harsh battlefield conditions, and loss of leaders. For all who fought at Tam Ky, their bravery and devotion to duty in an increasingly unpopular war is worthy to be remembered. With veterans of Tam Ky now growing older and fewer in number, it is past time to tell their story. “Sherwood has written one of the best, most comprehensive accounts of Vietnam War combat published to date.” —MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History

Book Eyes Behind the Lines US Army Long Range Reconnaissance and Surveillance Units

Download or read book Eyes Behind the Lines US Army Long Range Reconnaissance and Surveillance Units written by James F. Gebhardt and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyes Behind the Lines: US Army Long-Range Reconnaissance and Surveillance Units is the 10th study in the Combat Studies Institute (CSI) Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) Occasional Paper series. This work is an outgrowth of concerns identified by the authors of On Point: The United States Army in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Specifically, these authors called into question the use of long-range surveillance (LRS) assets by commanders during that campaign and suggested an assessment ought to be made about their continuing utility and means of employment. This revision contains some important additional information the author received after this book was originally published Major (Retired) James Gebhardt, of CSI, researched and wrote this Occasional Paper with that end in view. In this study, Gebhardt surveys the US Army s historical experience with LRRP and LRS units from the 1960s Cold War and Vietnam War, through their resurgence in the 1980s and use in Operations JUST CAUSE and DESERT STORM, to the advent of the GWOT. The paper's analytical framework examines each era of LRS units in terms of doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership, and personnel. In doing so, the author makes a strong case for continuing the LRS capability in the Army s force structure. The variety of environments and enemies likely to be faced by the military in the GWOT continues to demand the unique human intelligence abilities of trained and organized LRS units. As the Army leads the Armed Forces of the United States in combating terrorists where they live, the lessons found in this survey remain timely and relevant.

Book excerpt: Air Cav: History of the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam 1965-1969 is the story of the small, close world of fighting men in action. This volume can be many things to many people a book of memories, a souvenir, a pictorial essay on airmobility, or simply a story of gallant men at war. It can be many things, but one thing it is not, nor does it pretend to be a complete history of the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam. The task and burden of history must lie with the objectivity of future generations, far removed from current pressures and restraints. It is true, of course, that much research for this book has been done from available official records, the ultimate source of written history. But even more has been drawn from the vivid recollections of the Cavalrymen who fought, tasted the brassy bile of fear, shared the fierce exultation of victory, or were drenched in the dark despair of death. This volume contains the memoirs of a fighting team the FIRST TEAM. It is a memory ""
