Book 1001 Bizarre Football Stories

Download or read book 1001 Bizarre Football Stories written by Robert Lodge and published by Carlton Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A star striker sold in exchange for 15 kg of sausage meat, a chairman threatening to install hooligan-eating crocodiles at the stadium, a coach hired and fired in 10 minutes, and a player being sent off after one second for complaining that the referee's whistle was too loud--all true stories, which are amongst those that feature in this incredible collection of 1001 hilarious football stories. Following on in Carlton's highly successful 1001 Ridiculous series, Football Stories tells of hilariously silly incidents involving daft footballers, mad managers, crazy chairman, and foolish fans. Learn of the striker who secretly made love to his girlfriend on the center circle when the stadium is closed, only for the club to find out when she recounted the moment of passion on national television. This, plus training ground spates, drunken player partying, ludicrous signings, and acts of soccer stupidity make this the most entertaining collection of football stories you'll ever read.

Book 1 001 Days in the Bleachers

Download or read book 1 001 Days in the Bleachers written by Ted Cox and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loyal sports fans follow their teams through peaks and valleys, but in no other city have fans experienced the highs and lows of Chicagoans in the past generation. This collection of Ted Cox’s greatest hits writing "The Sports Section" for the Chicago Reader from 1983 to 2008 constitutes an intimate history of Chicago teams during these years. From the triumphs—the six titles won by the Bulls, the Super Bowl champion 1985 Bears, and the White Sox winning the World Series in 2005—to the regularly occurring collapses of the Cubs, Cox puts his audience on the scene. He evokes the fan’s experience with a level of vivid detail now nearly extinct from sports journalism. Cox writes like an ordinary observer who just happens to have excellent seats and easy access to the players and coaches. 1,001 Days in the Bleachers stands not only as a chronicle of Chicago’s teams but also as a portrait of the evolution of professional sports and their place in the life of the city.

Book Football Disasters The moments we will never forget

Download or read book Football Disasters The moments we will never forget written by Caroline Elwood-Stokes and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that we can divide the world-history of football-related deaths into three periods. The early period, 1900-1959, contains from 0 to 3 tragedies per decade. Deaths were very rare - but were tremendously tragic when they happened. Take for instance the very first incident occurring on the 5th of April in 1902 at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, where Scotland played England in the British Home Championship. At the time it was considered to be the most prestigious international tournament in the world and would therefore draw a large audience. While the game was being played the newly built wooden West Stand broke under the weight of the excited crowd. People fell several meters down and on top of each other - resulting in 26 people dying and 517 being injured. Blame was put on the rain that had fallen the night before the game, causing the wooden construction to become unstable. Arena architects abandoned wood as material for higher audience facilities after this episode. But what caused the other disasters?
