Ever since their father's untimely death five years before, Wyatt Smith and his inseparably close twin sister, Lucy, have scraped by alone on their family's isolated ranch in Box Elder County, Utah. That is until one morning when, just after spotting one of their steers lying dead in the field, Wyatt is hit in the arm by a hail of gunfire that takes four more cattle with it. The shooter: a fever-eyed, fearsome girl-child with a TEC-9 in her left hand and a worn shotgun in her right. They hold the girl captive, but she breaks loose overnight and heads south into the desert. With the dawning realization that the loss of cattle will mean the certain loss of the ranch, Wyatt feels he has no choice but to go after her and somehow find restitution for what's been lost. Wyatt's decision sets him on an epic twelve-day odyssey through a nightmarish underworld he only half understands; a world that pitches him not only against the primordial ways of men and the beautiful yet brutally unforgiving landscape, but also against himself. As he winds his way down from the mountains of Box Elder to the mesas of Monument Valley and back, Wyatt is forced to look for the first time at who he is and what he’s capable of, and how those hard truths set him irrevocably apart from the one person he’s ever really known and loved. Steeped in a mythic, wildly alive language of its own, and gripping from the first gunshot to the last, Rough Animals is a tour de force from a powerful new voice.

Book The Chinese HEART in a Cognitive Perspective

Download or read book The Chinese HEART in a Cognitive Perspective written by Ning Yu and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a cognitive semantic study of the Chinese conceptualization of the heart, traditionally seen as the central faculty of cognition. The Chinese word xin, which primarily denotes the heart organ, covers the meanings of both "heart" and "mind" as understood in English, which upholds a heart-head dichotomy. In contrast to the Western dualist view, Chinese takes on a more holistic view that sees the heart as the center of both emotions and thought. The contrast characterizes two cultural traditions that have developed different conceptualizations of person, self, and agent of cognition. The concept of "heart" lies at the core of Chinese thought and medicine, and its importance to Chinese culture is extensively manifested in the Chinese language. Diachronically, this book traces the roots of its conception in ancient Chinese philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine. Along the synchronic dimension, it not only makes a systematic analysis of conventionalized expressions that reflect the underlying cultural models and conceptualizations, as well as underlying conceptual metaphors and metonymies, but also attempts a textual analysis of an essay and a number of poems for their metaphoric and metonymic images and imports contributing to the cultural models and conceptualizations. It also takes up a comparative perspective that sheds light on similarities and differences between Western and Chinese cultures in the understanding of the heart, brain, body, mind, self, and person. The book contributes to the understanding of the embodied nature of human cognition situated in its cultural context, and the relationship between language, culture, and cognition.

Book Government and Society in Afghanistan

Download or read book Government and Society in Afghanistan written by Hasan Kawun Kakar and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative study of the administrative, social, and economic structure of Afghanistan at the beginning of the twentieth century. Government and Society in Afghanistan covers a decisive stage in the country’s history. The period covered—the reign of the “Iron” Amir Rahman Khan—was in many ways the beginning of modern Afghanistan as a cohesive nation. It was under the Amir that its borders were established, its internal unification completed, and the modern concept of nationhood implanted. Hsan Kawun Kakar considers both the internal and the external forces that influenced Afghanistan’s development. Thus, modernization, centralization, and nationalization are seen as both defensive reactions to European imperialism and a necessary step toward capital formation and industrialization. The first part of the book covers the government of the Amir, from the personality of the ruler to a comprehensive overview of taxation and local government. The second part views these economic and social institutions from the perspective of the major segments of the populace—including nomads, townsmen, tribes, women, slaves, landowners, mullahs, merchants, and others.

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book The History of al abar Vol 4 written by Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Ṭabarī takes up the history of the ancient world, focusing on the Iranians and the Israelites after the time of Solomon. He establishes a comparative chronology between the two nations; viewing Bahman, the Persian king, as the son of Esther, and his daughter, Khumani, the mother of Darius. Ṭabarī's synchronization also leads him into a discussion of North and South Arabia, in which stories about King Jadhimah, Queen Zabba, and the tribes of Ṭabarī and Jadis appear. Falling outside the general scheme of the volume, are other details. These are concentrated in five chapters on the biblical stories of Samson and Delilah, and on Jonah, commentary on a Quranic passage concerning three divine envoys, and on two stories of Christian antiquity, the Seven Sleepers and the martyr Jirjis. Ṭabarī presents a mass of Iranian, Jewish, Christian, and Arabian lore in order to create a unified view of the material. His treatment of the mythical Iranian kings, as they battle Turanians and other foes, extends beyond the time of Alexander and his successors to the era of the Gospels, John the Baptist, and Jesus. Tales of the Israelites include the story of Asa and Zerah the Indian, remarkable for its development of the Biblical nucleus and variants of the history of the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar.

Book Glimpses of India

  • Author : John F. Riddick

  • Release : 1989-04-17
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Glimpses of India written by John F. Riddick and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989-04-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selected annotated listing of 580 published personal writings of Englishmen involved in India from 1583 is intended to round out the scattered bibliographical compilations on the history of British India. Included are memoirs and autobiographies, collections of personal letters, diaries and journals, and travel narratives. The term British India is used in a broad historical sense to include Afghanistan, Nepal, Tibet, and Burma during the relevant periods of British influence. With a few exceptions, the volume excludes official minutes, reports, and correspondence. Although each work provides a unique account of the British experience, a number of broad trends emerge. One of the most striking is the initial experience of parting from family and homeland and embarking on what was, before 1830, a five to seven-month sail around the Cape of Good Hope. Travel within India, on the other hand, was a high point of the British experience and thus provides the subject for much of the writings. Other topics include the violence of the British-Indian conflict, and the constant danger of death from disease, accidents, or other mishaps. Light is also cast on the role of the Western missionaries, who were active in education, translating Indian languages, and writing dictionaries. Although they effected little change in such practices as infanticide, the missionaries did reinforce the prevalent British view of the Indians as savages. The bibliography is divided by time period, beginning with the British entry into India in 1583, the rise and consolidation of British India, and the Indian mutiny (1857-1858). The subsequent sections list and annotate writings of Imperial India, the period of reform and reaction that followed (1905-1920), and India's move toward independence. It will serve as an important reference for historians of the period, and will be a useful addition to college and university libraries.
