The Chinese word xin, which primarily denotes the heart organ, covers the meanings of both "heart" and "mind" as understood in English, which upholds a heart-head dichotomy. In contrast to the Western dualist view, Chinese takes on a more holistic view that sees the heart as the center of both emotions and thought. The contrast characterizes two cultural traditions that have developed different conceptualizations of person, self, and agent of cognition. The concept of "heart" lies at the core of Chinese thought and medicine, and its importance to Chinese culture is extensively manifested in the Chinese language. Diachronically, this book traces the roots of its conception in ancient Chinese philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine. Along the synchronic dimension, it not only makes a systematic analysis of conventionalized expressions that reflect the underlying cultural models and conceptualizations, as well as underlying conceptual metaphors and metonymies, but also attempts a textual analysis of an essay and a number of poems for their metaphoric and metonymic images and imports contributing to the cultural models and conceptualizations. It also takes up a comparative perspective that sheds light on similarities and differences between Western and Chinese cultures in the understanding of the heart, brain, body, mind, self, and person. The book contributes to the understanding of the embodied nature of human cognition situated in its cultural context, and the relationship between language, culture, and cognition.

He establishes a comparative chronology between the two nations; viewing Bahman, the Persian king, as the son of Esther, and his daughter, Khumani, the mother of Darius. Ṭabarī's synchronization also leads him into a discussion of North and South Arabia, in which stories about King Jadhimah, Queen Zabba, and the tribes of Ṭabarī and Jadis appear. Falling outside the general scheme of the volume, are other details. These are concentrated in five chapters on the biblical stories of Samson and Delilah, and on Jonah, commentary on a Quranic passage concerning three divine envoys, and on two stories of Christian antiquity, the Seven Sleepers and the martyr Jirjis. Ṭabarī presents a mass of Iranian, Jewish, Christian, and Arabian lore in order to create a unified view of the material. Included are memoirs and autobiographies, collections of personal letters, diaries and journals, and travel narratives. The term British India is used in a broad historical sense to include Afghanistan, Nepal, Tibet, and Burma during the relevant periods of British influence. With a few exceptions, the volume excludes official minutes, reports, and correspondence. Although each work provides a unique account of the British experience, a number of broad trends emerge. One of the most striking is the initial experience of parting from family and homeland and embarking on what was, before 1830, a five to seven-month sail around the Cape of Good Hope. Travel within India, on the other hand, was a high point of the British experience and thus provides the subject for much of the writings. Other topics include the violence of the British-Indian conflict, and the constant danger of death from disease, accidents, or other mishaps. Light is also cast on the role of the Western missionaries, who were active in education, translating Indian languages, and writing dictionaries. Although they effected little change in such practices as infanticide, the missionaries did reinforce the prevalent British view of the Indians as savages. The bibliography is divided by time period, beginning with the British entry into India in 1583, the rise and consolidation of British India, and the Indian mutiny (1857-1858). The subsequent sections list and annotate writings of Imperial India, the period of reform and reaction that followed (1905-1920), and India's move toward independence. It will serve as an important reference for historians of the period, and will be a useful addition to college and university libraries.
