Con prólogo de Mario Tascón ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Language curiosities, word tricks, false cognates, and other peculiarities to enjoy and understand the Spanish language. What words are transforming our world? What have been the most controversial language changes? Are there cannibalizing words? Language is the largest intangible heritage that all speakers of a same language have. The 1001 themes covered in this book analyze such things as: words that have crossed oceans and spanned continents from end to end to enrich the Spanish language, one shared by almost six hundred million people in the world, and it also analyzes expressions that have risen to give names to our new realities, such as selfie or gentrification. Such eternal doubts like if the period goes inside or outside of parentheses are also touched upon in this work. In short, 1001 Curiosities, Words, and Expressions of the Spanish Language constitutes a random, instructive, and entertaining journey through our language, a treasure chest that contains 1001 gems that can be read and enjoyed little by little in small quantities. Prologue by Mario Tascón.

Book excerpt: One year before his death Frank Kafka had an extraordinary experience. Having a walk through Steglitz Park, in Berlin, he found a little girl crying heartbroken. She had lost her doll. To calm her down Frank introduced himself as the Dolls's Postman, and told the little girl that the doll was away on a trip but had sent a letter for her that will be delivered by himself the following day. For three weeks Frank focused exclusively on the doll's letters that he handed on every day to the girl. Nobody has ever known who that little girl was and what happened with the letters.

Download or read book Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture written by Sara Eloy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture: Designing in Mixed Realities presents a curated selection of projects and texts contributed by leading international architects and designers who are using virtual reality technologies in their design process. It triggers discussion and debate on exploring the aesthetic potential and establishing its language as an expressive medium in architectural design. Although virtual reality is not new and the technology has evolved rapidly, the aesthetic potential of the medium is still emerging and there is a great deal more to explore. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the current use of virtual reality technologies in the architectural design process. Contributions are presented in six parts, fully illustrated with over 150 images. Recent projects presented are distributed in five themes: introduction to mixed realities; space and form; context and ambiguity; materiality and movement; body and social. Each theme includes richly illustrated essays by leading academics and practitioners, including those from Zaha Hadid Architects and MVRDV, detailing their design process using data-driven methodologies. Virtual Aesthetics in Architecture expands the use of technology per se and focuses on how architecture can benefit from its aesthetic potential during the design process. A must-read for practitioners, academics, and students interested in cutting-edge digital design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every industry in the world has benefited from the invention of plastics, but it is only in the recent past that they have begun to be appreciated as architectural materials in their own right. Plastics are quickly becoming one of the most ubiquitous materials in construction and have the potential to reshape the roles of architects and engineers, as well as the construction industry at large. As a building material, plastic allows for easily molded and formed shapes, leading to increasingly malleable design processes. Despite being the most deeply engineered building materials today, plastics are still in the nascent stages of understanding in terms of their potential applications and uses. In Permanent Change an interdisciplinary group of architects, historians, theorists, and engineers collectively explore the past, present, and future possibilities of this innovative building material.
Download or read book The Philosophical Roots of Loneliness and Intimacy written by Ben Lazare Mijuskovic and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ben Lazare Mijuskovic has spent 40 years researching theories of consciousness in relation to human loneliness, using an interdisciplinary and "history of ideas" approach. In this book, Mijuskovic combines Kant's theory of reflexive self-consciousness with Husserl's transcendent principle of intentionality to describe the distinctive philosophical, psychological, and sociological roots of loneliness and intimacy. He argues that loneliness is innate, unavoidable, and constituted by the structure of self-consciousness itself.
Download or read book Data Matter Design written by Frank Melendez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data, Matter, Design presents a comprehensive overview of current design processes that rely on the input of data and use of computational design strategies, and their relationship to an array of outputs. Technological changes, through the use of computational tools and processes, have radically altered and influenced our relationship to cities and the methods by which we design architecture, urban, and landscape systems. This book presents a wide range of curated projects and contributed texts by leading architects, urbanists, and designers that transform data as an abstraction, into spatial, experiential, and performative configurations within urban ecologies, emerging materials, robotic agents, adaptive fields, and virtual constructs. Richly illustrated with over 200 images, Data, Matter, Design is an essential read for students, academics, and professionals to evaluate and discuss how data in design methodologies and theoretical discourses have evolved in the last two decades and why processes of data collection, measurement, quantification, simulation, algorithmic control, and their integration into methods of reading and producing spatial conditions, are becoming vital in academic and industry practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glass is one of the most ubiquitous and extensively researched building materials. Despite the critical role it has played inmodern architecture in the last century, we have yet to fully comprehend the cultural and technological effects of thiscomplex and sophisticated building material. Engineered Transparency brings together an extraordinary, multidisciplinary group of international architects, engineers, manufacturers, and critics to collectively reconsider glasswithin the context of recent engineering and structural achievements. In light of these advancements, glass hasreemerged as a novel architectural material, offering new and previously unimaginable modes of visual pleasure andspatial experience. Engineered Transparency presents a portfolio of projects featuring cutting-edge glass designs by todays most innovative architects, including SANAA's acclaimed Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art, Yoshio Taniguchi's MoMA expansion in New York City, and Steven Holl's Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. With contributions by foremost thinkers in the field of architecture and design including historians Kenneth Frampton, Antoine Picon, and DetlefMertins; cultural critics Beatriz Colomina, Joan Ockman, and Reinhold Martin; engineers Werner Sobek, Guy Nordenson, and Richard Tomasetti; and architects Kazuyo Sejima, Steve Holl, and Elizabeth Diller, Engineered Transparency redefines glass as a 21st century building material and challenges our assumptions about its aesthetic, structural, and spatial potential.
Download or read book Post Ductility written by Michael Bell and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third book in the series from Columbia University is focused on metals. Metals, as surface or structure as the generators of space play a role in nearly every strain of modernization in architecture. They define complete geographies of work, production, and political life. Non-architectural metals delivered in automobiles, and hard goods in the United States and worldwide have all been sourced as the engines of the sprawling late twentieth-century city in all of its forms. But in the received aspects of architectural history, metals, and in particular steel, remain less diluted; they are presented as intrinsic to the profession as material precedes concepts they are carriers of architectural meaning. Few concepts are as central in structural engineering as the ability of a material to sustain plastic deformation under tensile stress the standardization of historically known deformation limits or ductile properties in most materials allows architects and engineers to keep the analysis of structure within known parameters of finite element analysis rather then materials science. If the goal is avoid fracture, the boundaries are set and the limits of ductility are observed. Post-Ductility refers to the literal aspects of material behavior in this case of metals but also of aspects of architectural and urban space that are measured by less verifiable but nonetheless real quotients of stress and strain. It is the tension and compression of space that gives form or coherence to form. In either the case of engineering and architecture, formerly daunting degrees of risk seem to have been diminished; new levels of sophistication in calculation lower the risk tolerance for fracture, while more metaphoric readings of limits in architectural and urban space seem to have been long surpassed, at times with abandon. The counter-effort has been quite strong if not successful: there are those that want to recreate dense cities by means of compression and there are immense forces of spatial extension by way of economics, communication and transit. Space is pulled to elastic limits and made thin as highly malleable materials such as gold or lead as it is also often re-compressed as forms of urban density. If metals are a significant origin for architecture and indeed whole cities—from buildings to automobiles and labor, then what are the limits or equations that offer a new evaluation of both metals, but also of material in a wider sense, as a determining component of the built world? What does an engineer and architect bring to this arena in both local and global circumstances?

Download or read book Social Value in Architecture written by Flora Samuel and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking edition of AD brings together a range of global expertise on social value, exploring its potential for demonstrating the positive impact of both architecture and architects on homes and communities in terms of social justice, sustainability and wellbeing. There has been a recent groundswell of interest in the mapping and measuring of social value caused by developments in legislation and planning, as well as a revival of interest in the ethical dimensions of architectural practice. Not only do architects promote wellbeing through the development of carefully conceived and appropriate designs, they can also add social value through the processes of consultation, visioning, briefing, co-design, co-creation, user manuals, soft landings (helping people to make the most of their buildings in use) and post-occupancy evaluation. These are, however, poorly recognised aspects of an architect’s role. We live in an audit culture where organisational performance is measured against predetermined targets. Unfortunately, the focus of architectural practice is generally on the financial cost of what it does in the short term rather than its long-term social value, arguably its market niche. This AD posits that the mapping and measuring of social value provides a real opportunity for the architectural profession to make its key contribution heard.
