Book Electronic States in Crystals of Finite Size

Download or read book Electronic States in Crystals of Finite Size written by SHANGYUAN REN and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-12-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of electronic states in crystals is the very basis of modern solid state physics. In traditional solid state physics – based on the Bloch theorem – the theory of electronic states in crystals is essentially a theory of electronic states in crystals of in?nite size. However, that any real crystal always has a ?nite size is a physical reality one has to face. The di?erence between the electronic structure of a real crystal of ?nite size and the electronic structure obtained based on the Bloch theorem becomes more signi?cant as the crystal size decreases. A clear understanding of the properties of electronic states in real crystals of ?nite size has both theoretical and practical signi?cance. Many years ago when the author was a student learning solid state physics at Peking University, he was bothered by a feeling that the general use of the periodic boundary conditions seemed unconvincing. At least the e?ects of such a signi?cant simpli?cation should be clearly understood. Afterward, he learned that many of his school mates had the same feeling. Among many solid state physics books, the author found that only in the classic book Dynamic Theory of Crystal Lattices by Born and Huang was there a more detailed discussion on the e?ects of such a simpli?cation in an Appendix.

Book Electronic States in Crystals of Finite Size

Download or read book Electronic States in Crystals of Finite Size written by Shang Yuan Ren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analytical theory of the electronic states in ideal low dimensional systems and finite crystals based on a differential equation theory approach. It provides precise and fundamental understandings on the electronic states in ideal low-dimensional systems and finite crystals, and offers new insights into some of the basic problems in low-dimensional systems, such as the surface states and quantum confinement effects, etc., some of which are quite different from what is traditionally believed in the solid state physics community. Many previous predictions have been confirmed in subsequent investigations by other authors on various relevant problems. In this new edition, the theory is further extended to one-dimensional photonic crystals and phononic crystals, and a general theoretical formalism for investigating the existence and properties of surface states/modes in semi-infinite one-dimensional crystals is developed. In addition, there are various revisions and improvements, including using the Kronig-Penney model to illustrate the analytical theory and make it easier to understand. This book is a valuable resource for solid-state physicists and material scientists.

Book KDP Family Single Crystals

Download or read book KDP Family Single Crystals written by L.N Rashkovich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The KDP family of single crystals is composed of compounds of alkali metals with light or heavy (hydro, deutero) water and oxides of phosphate or arsenate, including ammonium, potassium, rubidium and caesium dihydro- and dideutero-phosphates, and similar arsenates. While not occurring in nature, their production exceeds that of any other water-soluble crystals and the demand for bigger and more optically pure crystals is ever increasing. KDP-Family Single Crystals is a comprehensive investigation of the crystallization mechanism for these systems. The first part of the book collects the majority of the available data on the physico-chemical analysis of these systems. This is complemented by a review of contemporary concepts related to the crystal growth dislocation mechanism under the influence of impurities, changing supersaturation, and temperature. This is not only relevant to the growth of KDP single crystals but to the majority of crystals grown from low- and high-temperature solutions. Finally, attention is given to the important problem of speeding up the production processes for the growth of these crystals while maintaining the quality of the crystals. The in-depth coverage that KDP-Family Single Crystals provides to the art of crystal growth techniques makes it an essential reference work for all those working in the field of crystal growth and to those using KDP-family crystals in quantum electronics devices.

Book Geometry of Crystals Polycrystals and Phase Transformations

Download or read book Geometry of Crystals Polycrystals and Phase Transformations written by Harshad K. D. H. Bhadeshia and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized into a two-part structure aimed at readers of differing experience levels, Geometry of Crystals, Polycrystals, and Phase Transformations is accessible to both newcomers and advanced researchers within the field of crystallography. The first part of the text covers what any reader in the material sciences, physics, chemistry, earth sciences and natural sciences in general should know about crystallography. It is intentionally concise and covers sufficient material to form a firm foundation. The second part is aimed at researchers and discusses phase transformations, deformations, and interface crystallography in depth. The phase transformations are limited to those dominated by crystallography. The entire book contains worked examples and uniquely deals not just with crystals but aggregates of crystals and solid-state transformations between crystals.

Book Engineering Crystallography From Molecule to Crystal to Functional Form

Download or read book Engineering Crystallography From Molecule to Crystal to Functional Form written by Kevin J. Roberts and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the current state-of-the-art regarding the application of applied crystallographic methodologies for understanding, predicting and controlling the transformation from the molecular to crystalline state with the latter exhibiting pre-defined properties. This philosophy is built around the fundamental principles underpinning the three inter-connected themes of Form (what), Formation (how) and Function (why). Topics covered include: molecular and crystal structure, chirality and ferromagnetism, supramolecular assembly, defects and reactivity, morphology and surface energetics. Approaches for preparing crystals and nano-crystals with novel physical, chemical and mechanical properties include: crystallisation, seeding, phase diagrams, polymorphic control, chiral separation, ultrasonic techniques and mechano-chemistry. The vision is realised through examination of a range of advanced analytical characterisation techniques including in-situ studies. The work is underpinned through an unprecedented structural perspective of molecular features, solid-state packing arrangements and surface energetics as well as in-situ studies. This work will be of interest to researchers, industrialists, intellectual property specialists and policy makers interested in the latest developments in the design and supply of advanced high added-value organic solid-form materials and product composites.
