Book The Drama of a Rural Community s Life Cycle

Download or read book The Drama of a Rural Community s Life Cycle written by S. Roy Kaufman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural communities depend on the health of the agrarian cultures that compose them. These cultures grow out of the symbiotic relationship between a particular landscape and the human community that lives on and uses the land. Agrarian cultures had their origin in the development of agriculture and gave birth to the civilizations and empires of history. Based on the exercise of hierarchical power characteristic of their nature, empires and civilizations are always a threat to the welfare of their agrarian cultures, that by nature tend to be local, relational, reciprocal, and ecological. This is the story of the three Anabaptist agrarian cultures—Swiss German, Low German, and Hutterian—of the Freeman, South Dakota, rural community, and their sojourn within the empires of civilization through the centuries. More specifically, this is the story of their birth, growth, maturation, and death (or rebirth?) in the particular landscape of the Great Plains to which they came from Russia in the 1870s. Here we see the agrarian cultures’ struggle to adapt to the new environment of the Great Plains and to maintain their unique identity while living within American society. This is the drama of a rural community’s life cycle!

Book 100 Years of Women in the Dental Profession in the UK 1918 2018

Download or read book 100 Years of Women in the Dental Profession in the UK 1918 2018 written by Janine Brooks and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a showcase celebration of the achievements of women dental professionals in the 100 years since (some) women first achieved the right to vote in the United Kingdom. Women dentists hold equal status as men within the profession, although there is some way to go before this is mirrored across dentistry as a whole. This volume will serve to provide inspiration to all dental professionals, men and women, regarding the many and varied opportunities dentistry provides. The women profiled are working (or have worked) in all aspects of dentistry, they are role models to all and are a credit to the profession. We can learn so much from each other, and the role of mentoring is an important underpinning thread that runs throughout the book and is highlighted in the career stories of each woman.

Book Protectors of the Land and Water

Download or read book Protectors of the Land and Water written by Thomas R. Huffman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the twentieth century, Wisconsin citizens have promoted innovative environmental programs. During the 1960s Wisconsin was again at the forefront of the movement advancing mainstream political environmentalism. Thomas Huffman traces the rise of environmentalism in the Badger State during these key years, when the people of Wisconsin instituted policies in such areas as outdoor recreation and resource planning, water pollution control, the preservation of wild rivers, and centralized environmental management. Huffman focuses especially on the influence of Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Democrat and founder of Earth Day, and Governor Warren Knowles, a Republican. He shows that their efforts--and the efforts of their followers in citizen groups, the business and university communities, and the state government--clearly indicate that the origins of environmentalism cannot be placed along a left-right political spectrum. Rather, the movement evolved from an interweaving of liberal and conservative ideologies and from important traditions and precedents within the state's environmental culture. What happened in Wisconsin is particularly significant, Huffman points out, because of the effect of that state's example on other states and the federal government. Originally published in 1994. Book Black Texas Women 150 Years of Trial and Triumph

Download or read book Black Texas Women 150 Years of Trial and Triumph written by Ruthe Winegarten and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Enriches and complicates African American and women’s history by connecting threads of race, gender, class, and region.” —Darlene Clark Hine, John A. Hannah Professor of History, Michigan State University Winner of the Liz Carpenter Award from the Texas State Historical Association Women of all colors have shaped families, communities, institutions, and societies throughout history, but only in recent decades have their contributions been widely recognized, described, and celebrated. This book presents the first comprehensive history of Black Texas women, a previously neglected group whose 150 years of continued struggle and some successes against the oppression of racism and sexism deserve to be better known and understood. Beginning with slave and free women of color during the Texas colonial period and concluding with contemporary women who serve in the Texas legislature and the United States Congress, Ruthe Winegarten organizes her history both chronologically and topically. Her narrative sparkles with the life stories of individual women and their contributions to the work force, education, religion, the club movement, community building, politics, civil rights, and culture. The product of extensive archival and oral research and illustrated with over 200 photographs, this groundbreaking work will be equally appealing to general readers and to scholars of women’s history, black history, American studies, and Texas history. “Occasionally a book comes along that is monumental in scope, overwhelming in amount of research, and so powerful in its impact as to be categorized at once as a lasting contribution to our knowledge of humankind. Black Texas Women is one of those rare books.” —The Journal of American History
