Book Crossing Borders

Download or read book Crossing Borders written by Max Baca and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Baca is one of the foremost artists of Tex-Mex music, the infectious dance music sweeping through the Texas-Mexico borderlands since the 1940s. His Grammy-winning group, Los Texmaniacs, and his extensive work with the accordionist Flaco Jiménez established the Albuquerque-born and San Antonio-based bajo sexto player/bandleader as a spokesperson for a too-often-maligned culture. The list of artists who have contributed to Los Texmaniacs' albums include Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely, Rick Trevino, Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, and Lyle Lovett. Max Baca was born to play music. By his eighth birthday, he was already playing in his father's band. Polkas, redovas, corridos, boleros, chotises, huapangos, and waltzes are in his blood. Baca's music grew out of the harsh life of the borderland, and the duality of borderland music--its keening beauty--remains a recurring theme in everything he does.

What was once brushed off as "hick music" only to be enjoyed by country stereotypes is now being enjoyed by more people than ever before. Its audience has grown exponentially, and its songs are dominating the radio waves. While the rest of the music industry continues to struggle, country seems to be stronger than ever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2022 Belmont Award for the Best Book on Country Music, International Country Music Conference/Belmont University New and expanded biography of one of country music’s most celebrated singer-songwriters. Merle Haggard enjoyed numerous artistic and professional triumphs, including more than a hundred country hits (thirty-eight at number one), dozens of studio and live album releases, upwards of ten thousand concerts, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and songs covered by artists as diverse as Lynryd Skynyrd, Elvis Costello, Tammy Wynette, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Willie Nelson, the Grateful Dead, and Bob Dylan. In The Running Kind, a new edition that expands on his earlier analysis and covers Haggard's death and afterlife as an icon of both old-school and modern country music, David Cantwell takes us on a revelatory journey through Haggard’s music and the life and times out of which it came. Covering the breadth of his career, Cantwell focuses especially on the 1960s and 1970s, when Haggard created some of his best-known and most influential music: songs that helped invent the America we live in today. Listening closely to a masterpiece-crowded catalogue (including “Okie from Muskogee,” “Sing Me Back Home,” “Mama Tried,” and “Working Man Blues,” among many more), Cantwell explores the fascinating contradictions—most of all, the desire for freedom in the face of limits set by the world or self-imposed—that define not only Haggard’s music and public persona but the very heart of American culture.

This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am retired, 82 years old. I have written four books since my retirement. I am a country music fan and I got to wondering who were the top 100 country singers. So I go on the Internet and start searching. I searched country music records for the top 100 singers.I searched the country music Association to find out who they felt was the top 100 singers. I compiled a list and started searching for them. I wanted to get all the information on them that I could. How they got started, what their background was, what they did in order to succeed as country music singers. What I found out was unbelievable. What the singers went through in life just to achieve their goal. Some of them ended up as alcoholics. Dope addicts, and a lot of them ended up with bad health. Most of the singers once they got started spent as much as 300 days on the road promoting their music. This interfered with family life and got to the point where they had no life at all.We buy their records to play and we listen to them playing on the radio but we have no idea what the singers go through. What I have gathered on them and written in this book is unbelievable. If you have a favorite country singer and you want to know how they got started and what they did to achieve their goal and you need to read this book.I have gathered autobiographies of the top 100 country singers as I gathered from the country music Association and fans from around the world. I know you will enjoy this book if you are a country music fan.
