Download or read book 10 Things Employers Expect Their Employees to Know written by Frederick H. Wentz and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This soft skills workbook is an excellent tool for individuals preparing to look for or start new jobs, as well as individuals who are currently working but need to step back and evaluate their performance. It is a practical, helpful guide about acting appropriately and professionally on a job and addresses realities of the working world and how to cope with them, and not just ideal situations. Soft skills are the nontechnical skills and traits that an individual needs to function in the workplace. They include four sets of workplace competencies: oral communication skills, interpersonal and teamwork skills, personal qualities and work ethic, and problem solving and other cognitive skills. Two very important soft skills addressed in this workbook are work attitude and work behavior. Work attitude is the way an employee feels about his or her job and the approach to the job. It is internal and cannot be seen by other employees. A positive work attitude is the ability to carry out job tasks and work assignments with pride. Work behavior is the way an employee does his or her actual job and how the job gets done. It is usually a direct response to his or her work attitude. It can be seen by other employees. A positive work behavior includes the knowledge, hard work, dedication, and skill put into the finished product.

Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Case studies include 9/11 evacuation or non-evacuation directions that saved or cost lives to an actual snow day in Atlanta, that left thousands of school students stranded in schools and on roadways in buses. The extent to which crisis management strategy, technology and training were leveraged--or not--made all the difference. The pandemic is the mother of all Snow Days and Mark McCourt captures the thinking and emotions of business leaders who share their personal and courageous first-hand experiences. Book Automatic enrolment in workplace pensions and the National Employment Savings Trust

Download or read book Automatic enrolment in workplace pensions and the National Employment Savings Trust written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Work and Pensions Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government established NEST as a low-cost pension scheme to help deliver the auto-enrolment programme and to address a market failure in the pensions industry which meant that many employers and employees were unable to access low-cost, good quality pension provision. However, the Committee believes that certain restrictions placed on NEST will create complexity for employers and will disadvantage some employees. The Committee's report recommends that, if state aid rules allow, the Government should remove the following restrictions: the cap on the annual contributions an individual can make to a NEST scheme; and the ban on individuals transferring existing pension pots into NEST. The Committee further urges the Government to proceed with its plans for State Pension reform, introducing a flat-rate State Pension and reducing the level of means-testing without delay. The report also highlights the difficulties and complexity employers and employees currently face in comparing the fees and charges applied by pension providers and recommends that, from 2013 onwards, if some auto-enrolment schemes still have hidden charges, or charges that represent poor value for money, the Government should use its powers to intervene. Auto-enrolment will impose new costs and may be particularly challenging for small employers however the Committee considers that the Government has taken appropriate steps to minimise the impact on businesses through its gradual and flexible approach ("staging and phasing") to implementation. Exempting small employers would create significant complexity, as well as excluding many employees from the benefits of workplace pension saving

Book Unjust Transition

Download or read book Unjust Transition written by Emily Eaton and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-21T00:00:00Z with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2019, Regina’s Co-op Refinery Complex (CRC), a subsidiary of Federated Co-operative, locked out Unifor Local 594 after collective bargaining negotiations failed. CRC used the transition to a “low carbon” future as the justification for concessions on working conditions and reducing the workers' pension plan. The lockout demonstrates what a “just transition” means to fossil fuel corporations: rollbacks of collective bargaining, worker rights, cooperative spirit and environmental justice. In the name of a new future, Federated Co-operative and the Saskatchewan government trampled all over important worker rights — the right to strike and picket, occupational health and safety, pensions and collective bargaining. It also highlights the sorry state of co-operative values in Canada. As corporations and governments are poised to make a transition that will be detrimental to workers and communities, this books argues that solidarity between unions and community movements is absolutely necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuels a just one.
