Book excerpt: Explore the conceptual origins of wargames and role-playing games in this unprecedented history of simulating the real and the impossible. From a vast survey of primary sources ranging from eighteenth-century strategists to modern hobbyists, Playing at the World distills the story of how gamers first decided fictional battles with boards and dice, and how they moved from simulating wars to simulating people. The invention of role-playing games serves as a touchstone for exploring the ways that the literary concept of character, the lure of fantastic adventure and the principles of gaming combined into the signature cultural innovation of the late twentieth century.

Book Affordance Theory in Game Design

Download or read book Affordance Theory in Game Design written by Hamna Aslam and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Games, whether educational or recreational, are meant to be fun. How do we ensure that the game delivers its intent? The answer to this question is playtesting. However, a haphazard playtest process cannot discover play experience from various dimensions. Players' perceptions, affordances, age, gender, culture, and many more human factors influence play experience. A playtest requires an intensive experimental process and scientific protocols to ensure that the outcomes seen are reliable for the designer. Playtesting and players' affordances are the focus of this book. This book is not just about the playtest procedures but also demonstrates how they lead to the conclusions obtained when considering data sets. The playtest process or playtest stories differ according to the hypothesis under investigation. We cover examples of playtesting to identify the impact of human factors, such as age and gender, to examine a player's preferences for game objects' design and colors. The book details topics to reflect on possible emotional outcomes of the player at the early stages of game design as well as the methodology for presenting questions to players in such a way as to elicit authentic feedback. This book is intended mainly for game designers, researchers, and developers. However, it provides a general understanding of affordances and human factors that can be informative for readers working in any domain.

Book The Unfinished Game

Download or read book The Unfinished Game written by Keith Devlin and published by . This book was released on 2010-03-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the mid-seventeenth century, scholars generally agreed that it was impossible to predict something by calculating mathematical outcomes. One simply could not put a numerical value on the likelihood that a particular event would occur. Even the outcome of something as simple as a dice roll or the likelihood of showers instead of sunshine was thought to lie in the realm of pure, unknowable chance. The issue remained intractable until Blaise Pascal wrote to Pierre de Fermat in 1654, outlining a solution to the "unfinished game" problem: how do you divide the pot when players are forced to.

Book Password Generator for Ten Sided Dice

    Book Details:
  • Author : www.passwordgeneratordice.com
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2018-04-02
  • ISBN : 9781985202986
  • Pages : 106 pages

Download or read book Password Generator for Ten Sided Dice written by www.passwordgeneratordice.com and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To generate a password using this password generator for ten-sided dice, you need two ten-sided dice: one labeled 0 to 9, and the other labeled 00 to 90. Roll the dice and add the numbers together. Turn to that page. On that page there are a hundred nouns numbered from 0 to 99. Roll the dice again and add the numbers together to see which of those nouns you will include in your password. For example, if you roll a 2 and a 10 on your first roll, you would turn to page 12. Then if you roll an 8 and a 40, you would include the noun numbered 48, "Software." If you include only one noun in your password, there is a 1 in 10 thousand chance that it will be guessed on the first try. This is inadequate for most security applications. So, repeat the process in the previous paragraph to get at least three more nouns to include in your password. Continuing the previous example, your password might be "SoftwareBucketStarAnthropology." With four nouns, there is only a 1 in 10 quadrillion chance that it will be guessed on the first try.

This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weave legendary stories in the world’s greatest roleplaying game. All you need to run a Dungeons & Dragons game is your imagination, some dice, and this book. The Dungeon Master’s Guide teaches you how to how to run D&D adventures for your players— how to invent monsters for them to fight, mysteries for them to solve, and fantasy worlds for them to explore. “[The Dungeon Master’s Guide is] the one book to rule them all, the most comprehensive and powerful set of resources needed to run a game of D&D. . .” —Charlie Hall, Polygon.com “D&D acolytes are everywhere...Tech workers from Silicon Valley to Brooklyn have long-running campaigns, and the showrunners and the novelist behind ‘Game of Thrones’ have all been Dungeon Masters.”—Neima Jahromi, The New Yorker • The Dungeon Master’s Guide is one of the three main Dungeons & Dragons books, along with the Player’s Handbook and Monster Manual. It’s a reference used by the Dungeon Master (the game’s narrator) to create adventures—to run Dungeons & Dragons games and fill them with characters and stories. • The Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG) is full of tools to help you immerse players in the game. What’s the demon lord’s secret weakness? Are the orcish invaders a criminal enterprise, or traitorous allies? Dozens of tables throughout the book help inspire your decisions and keep the game flowing smoothly. • In the Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG), even the tables tell tales. A legendary sword takes five decades to craft. Who created it, and why? A tavern-crawling gnome has an eye twitch. How did she get it, and when? In every detail is an architecture for narrative—and the Dungeon Master’s Guide has all the tools you need to flesh it out with ease. • In Dungeons & Dragons, you and your friends coauthor your own legend. Guided by a Dungeon Master, you create characters and play their roles in a story, rolling dice and navigating maps as you unfold a tale as limitless as your imagination. • Dungeons & Dragons is the world’s greatest roleplaying game. Created in 1974, D&D transformed gaming culture by blending traditional fantasy with miniatures and wargaming.
