Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Book History of the Royal Munster Fusiliers from 1861 to 1922

Download or read book History of the Royal Munster Fusiliers from 1861 to 1922 written by S McCance and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history relates the story of one of the British Army's fighting Irish units from the middle of the 19th century to its disbandment on the attainment of Irish independence in 1922. Originating in India as the 101st Regiment of Foot (Royal Bengal Fusiliers) the Munster Fusiliers subsequently served in the Boer War. The bulk of this history, however, covers their distinguished record in the Great War when they were deployed at Gallipoli - being among the units that landed on 'V Beach' from the 'River Clyde' on April 25th 1915. The Munsters subsequently landed at Suvla Bay in August 1915, and continued to serve in the Dardanelles until the evacuaion in January 1916. After being re-deployed to France in March 1916, the Munsters served at Ginchy on the Somme; at Wytschaete in the battle of Messines in June 1917; at Cambrai in November 1917; and resisted the German offensive in March 1918. They took part inn the final Allied advance to victory from July 1918, serving on the Drocourt-Queant Line; and the Canal du Nord. The Munsters were formally disbanded in July 1922. This is a handsome unit history, with colour illustrations, which will fascinate any student of the Great War - particularly Gallipoli- and anyone interest in the Irish units of he British Army.

Book excerpt: As Ireland recovers it's lost memories of World War One, among those coming to light is the painting entitled 'The Last Absolution of the Munsters at Rue du Bois, 8th May 1915' Painted in 1915 by the Italian artist, Fortunino Matania, is one of the most famous and evocative Irish related paintings of the War. It depicts the Catholic Chaplain of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers giving a General Absolution to the men of the Battalion at dusk on the eve of the Battle of Aubers Ridge which took place on the 9th of May, 1915. In front of a wayside shrine on the Rue du Bois, the priest, Father Francis A. Gleeson, is on horseback, to his left, also on horseback, is the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Munsters, Colonel Victor G. H. Rickard. On foot directly behind Father Gleeson, the Adjutant, Captain Thomas W. Filgate, stands next to the shrine with his rifle slung over his shoulder. To the Chaplain's right and a few feet away from Filgate, with his rifle in front of him on the ground, stands the Regimental Sergeant-Major, John Ring. All four figures stand to face some of the men of A Company of the 2nd Munsters. The painting is a lasting memorial to the Battalion. It was also, no doubt at the time, of great propaganda value to the recruitment of young Irishmen and yet it also struck a chord in homes all over Munster and elsewhere. Copies of the painting were widely distributed in newspapers both in the U. K. and Ireland from 1915 onwards and many ended up framed over mantelpieces in family homes. It is said that, prior to the 1916 Rising, a copy of the 'Last Absolution' hung in nearly every home in Munster where the name of Father Gleeson was well known along with that of the Regiment that he blessed. Over time, however, the memory of both the priest and the Royal Munster Fusiliers has faded until now, at the centenary, and as they are re-discovered, the question again arises - who were these men? The following is the story of the men of the 'Last Absolution' in the first year of the war and the woman behind it.

Book excerpt: By Christmas 1914, the wild wave of enthusiasm that had sent men flocking to join up a few months earlier began to tail off, and though the original British Expeditionary Force had suffered 90 percent casualties, most people, particularly the soldiers themselves, still believed that 1915 would see the breaking of the deadlock. But their hopes were shattered on the bloody battlefields of Neuve Chapelle, Ypres, Loos, and far away on the shores of Gallipoli. Lyn Macdonald's story of 1915 is stark, brutal, frank, sometimes painfully funny, always human. Never before has any writer collected so many firsthand accounts of the experiences of ordinary soldiers, through diaries, letters, and interviews with survivors—and it is the dogged heroism and sardonic humor of the soldiers that shine through the pages of this epic narrative. 1915 is a uniquely compelling blend of military history and poignant memories of the fighters who survived the ordeal.

Book excerpt: This brief account of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers at Gallipoli is built on the letters and other accounts of the participants which were published at the time and are very much of the time in their style and thought. Many of those who have an interest in the history of the Munsters will be aware of the diaries, etc, of G. W. Geddes, G. W. Nightingale and Denis Moriarty much of which are available online or are quoted in many well-known publications. This account sidelines these well-known Munsters to concentrate on the men and lesser-known officers of the Battalion in order to tell the story of the 1st Munsters at Gallipoli in 1915. It also includes an extensive casualty list and other genealogical details.
