Book 1 3 Gas Surface Processes and LEED

Download or read book 1 3 Gas Surface Processes and LEED written by J. W. May and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low energy back-reflection electron diffraction (LEED) is a powerful method for studying monocrystalline surfaces, either in the clean state or with adsorbed substances. Weak penetration of slow electrons means that mainly surface atoms are important for scattering whether they belong to the substrate or to an adsorbed species. Clean surfaces can be produced and studied prior to adsorption experiments. LEED studies show that gases can be adsorbed in 2-dimensional arrangements peculiar to the specific crystallographic orientation of a particular single crystal substrate. Chemisorption often causes reconstruction of the surface with substrate atoms moving to new positions to incorporate foreign atoms in 2-dimensional matrices. Heating gas-covered surfaces may bring about faceting to expose other crystallographic planes (gross reconstruction). Heating may also cause the adsorbate to decompose, dissolve in the substrate or partially evaporate to leave behind different structures of lower coverage. Experiments illustrating many of these features are described for nickel and tungsten surfaces after adsorption of oxygen.

Book Surface Processing and Laser Assisted Chemistry

Download or read book Surface Processing and Laser Assisted Chemistry written by E. Fogarassy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-12-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume cover all aspects of laser assisted surface processing ranging from the preparation of high-Tc superconducting layer structures to industrial laser applications for device fabrication. The topics presented give recent results in organometallic chemistry and laser photochemistry, and novel surface characterization techniques. The ability to control the surface morphology by digital deposition and etching shows one of the future directions for exciting applications of laser surface processing, some of which may apply UV and VUV excitation. The understanding of elementary proceses is essential for the design of novel deposition methods, with diamond CVD being an outstanding example. The high quality of these contributions once again demonstrates that the E-MRS is an efficient forum for interaction between research workers and industry.

Book Fundamentals of Gas Surface Interactions

Download or read book Fundamentals of Gas Surface Interactions written by Howard Saltsburg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Gas–Surface Interactions presents the study of the surface itself and the study of the gas phase partner of the interaction in which physical or chemical transformation of the gas resulted from that interaction. This book discusses the study of the energy and momentum exchanges resulting from the gas–solid physical interaction in which either gas or solid phase properties can be measured. Organized into three parts encompassing 33 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the different sensitive physical methods for the study of surface topography, surface defects, and surface irregularities to an accuracy of a few Angstroms. This text then reviews the adsorption at very low coverage that has yielded to equilibrium analysis. Other chapters consider the measurement of surface area by adsorption and optical techniques. The final chapter deals with scattering processes including momentum and energy transfer. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Book Dynamic Chemical Processes on Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Dynamic Chemical Processes on Solid Surfaces written by Ken-ichi Tanaka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the author determines that a surface is itself a new material for chemical reaction, and the reaction of the surface provides additional new materials on that surface. The revelation of that peculiarity is what makes this book different from an ordinary textbook, and this new point of view will help to provide a new impetus when graduate students and researchers consider their results. The reaction of surface atoms provides additional new compounds, but these compounds cannot be detached from the surface. Some compounds are passive, but others work as catalysts. One superior feature of the surface is the dynamic cooperation of two or more different functional materials or sites on the same surface. This fact has been well established in the preferential oxidation of CO on platinum supported on a carbon nanotube with Ni-MgO at its terminal end. The Pt and Ni-MgO are perfectly separated, but these two are indispensable for the selective oxidation of CO in H2, where the H2O molecule plays a key role. The reader will understand that the complexity of catalysis is due to the complexity of the dynamic processes on the surface.

Download or read book Auger Electron Spectroscopy written by Donald T. Hawkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy is rapidly developing into the single most powerful analytical technique in basic and applied science.for investigating the chemical and structural properties of solids. Its ex plosive growth beginning in 1967 was triggered by the development of Auger analyzers capable of de tecting one atom layer of material in a fraction of a second. Continued growth was guaranteed firstly by the commercial availability of apparatus which combined the capabilities of scanning electron mi croscopy and ion-mill depth profiling with Auger analysis, and secondly by the increasing need to know the atomistics of many processes in fundamental research and engineering applications. The expanding use of Auger analysis was accompanied by an increase in the number of publications dealing with it. Because of the developing nature of Auger spectroscopy, the articles have appeared in many different sources covering diverse disciplines, so that it is extremely difficult to discover just what has or has not been subjected to Auger analysis. In this situation, a comprehensive bibliography is obviou-sly useful to those both inside and outside the field. For those in the field, this bibliography should be a wonderful time saver for locating certain references, in researching a particular topic, or when considering various aspects of instrumentation or data analysis. This bibliography not only provides the most complete listing of references pertinent to surface Auger analysis available today, but it is also a basis for extrapolating from past trends to future expectations.
