Book Comparing Husserl s Phenomenology and Chinese Yogacara in a Multicultural World

Download or read book Comparing Husserl s Phenomenology and Chinese Yogacara in a Multicultural World written by Jingjing Li and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While phenomenology and Yogacara Buddhism are both known for their investigations of consciousness, there exists a core tension between them: phenomenology affirms the existence of essence, whereas Yogacara Buddhism argues that everything is empty of essence (svabhava). How is constructive cultural exchange possible when traditions hold such contradictory views? Answering this question and positioning both philosophical traditions in their respective intellectual and linguistic contexts, Jingjing Li argues that what Edmund Husserl means by essence differs from what Chinese Yogacarins mean by svabhava, partly because Husserl problematises the substantialist understanding of essence in European philosophy. Furthermore, she reveals that Chinese Yogacara has developed an account of self-transformation, ethics and social ontology that renders it much more than simply a Buddhist version of Husserlian phenomenology. Detailing the process of finding a middle ground between the two traditions, this book demonstrates how both can thrive together in order to overcome Orientalism.

The process of compiling information for Behind the Numbers began with a repeating nod from an elusive yet powerful Presence that introduced itself through 11:11. Providing no answers but offering reassurance, the Presence encouraged Todd to search within to discover the answers he believed existed somewhere outside himself. Behind the Numbers chronicles a journey born in the ruins of addiction and spiritual paralysis and rises from the ashes toward redemption through determination and forgiveness. Beginning as a journal documenting the ongoing process of healing and spiritual transformation and concluding as a guide that takes a unique and relevant approach to Numerology, Behind the Numbers offers a unique approach towards Numerology that expands ones understanding of this amazing philosophy. Behind the Numbers takes a unique approach towards numerology by identifying numbers as ‘filters’ that channel the characteristics of the individual, as well as their Fate and Destiny. Rather than definitive indicators of the individual’s limitations or abilities, Behind the Numbers releases such expectations and approaches this ancient philosophy from an entirely new perspective that is accessible as it is profound.

Download or read book Three Steps to Awakening written by Larry Rosenberg and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deceptively simple three-phase method presented here is a meditation practice that can be worked with for a lifetime. Larry Rosenberg looks to Zen, to Insight Meditation, and to the teachings of J. Krishnamurti to find three kinds of meditation that anyone can do and that complement each other in a wonderful way: (1) breath awareness, (2) breath as anchor, and (3) choiceless awareness. Having the three methods in one’s repertoire gives one meditation resources for any life situation. In a time of stress, for example, one might use breath awareness exclusively. Or on an extended retreat, one might find choiceless awareness more appropriate. The three-step method has been taught to Larry’s students at the Cambridge Meditation Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for many years. After teaching the three-step method, Larry goes on to show how to bring the awareness gained in meditation to the world off the cushion, into relationships and into all areas of daily life.
