Book Bushwhackers 04 The Dying Town

Download or read book Bushwhackers 04 The Dying Town written by B. J. Lanagan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1998-02-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Civil War, they sought justice outside of the law, paying back every Yankee raid with one of their own. No man could stop them. No woman could resist them. And no Yankee stood a chance when Win and Joe Coulter rode into town. All Win Coulter wanted was a nice hand of poker. But his hand was hotter than the Devil’s coffee mug, and he ended up winning the deed to a Belle Springs saloon named the Desert Flower. Now Win and his brother, Joe, have a place to drink for free. But Belle Springs is run by a sheriff as crooked as an old man’s spine. He runs his own watering hole, and he doesn’t cotton to competition. So it looks like the Bushwhackers will have to ante up a special “sheriff’s tax” or get out of town. Yeah, right.

Book Sustainable Urban Logistics

Download or read book Sustainable Urban Logistics written by Jesus Gonzalez-Feliu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban logistics has been a subject of interest to researchers and practitioners for more than 20 years in France and Europe, and more than 40 in the United States. Nevertheless, the subject remains difficult to address by a lack of unification in the definitions and proposed methods but also by what makes its great richness: the diversity of actors and the pluridisciplinarity of the methods and techniques available. This book, which synthesizes more than 10 years of personal research on the subject, but also experience within different teams and projects, intends to bring a unified vision (and more and more followed at the international level) on logistics planning Urban development. It begins with an overview of research in urban logistics and then describes and defines the main components: flows, actors, infrastructures, management components, technologies, regulations and financing actions. A unified vision of these elements as well as the definition of sustainable urban logistics is proposed. Then, the book presents the basics of planning and managing sustainable urban logistics. First, the basics of the before-after analysis are introduced, not only for the experiments but also for the simulation of scenarios. To carry out this type of analysis, two main groups of methods are needed: methods for estimating flows and methods for calculating evaluation indicators. The book presents the main global standards and dominant models for the estimation of the urban freight transport demand, i.e. of freight transport needs in urban areas. Then it presents the methods for estimating and simulating transport and distribution schemes (i.e. transport supply) as well as a proposal for integrated supply-demand modeling. All these methods are presented for immediate application to practitioners, accompanied by summary tables and parameters necessary for their implementation. As far as evaluation is concerned, the book presents a framework for the choice of sustainable indicators and scorecards. Second, the main methods for economic, environmental, social and accessibility assessment are presented. They are accompanied by tables and figures necessary for their implementation. Finally, the main applications of the proposed methods are introduced. The book is meant to be a practical guide to applying the main methods from scientific research to a practical context, and presents examples of quantified and explained application. It is thus the first book that summarizes and presents the main unified methods to help the different decision-makers to implement them in their actions of planning and management of the urban logistics and the transport of goods in town.

Book Roadless Rules

Download or read book Roadless Rules written by Tom Turner and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2010-04-14 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roadless Rules is a fast-paced and insightful look at one of the most important, wide-ranging, and controversial efforts to protect public forests ever undertaken in the United States. In January 2000, President Clinton submitted to the Federal Register the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, prohibiting road construction and timber harvesting in designated roadless areas. Set to take effect sixty days after Clinton left office, the rule was immediately challenged by nine lawsuits from states, counties, off-road-vehicle users, and timber companies. The Bush administration refused to defend the rule and eventually sought to replace it with a rule that invited governors to suggest management policies for forests in their states. That rule was attacked by four states and twenty environmental groups and declared illegal. Roadless Rules offers a fascinating overview of the creation of the Clinton roadless rule and the Bush administration’s subsequent replacement rule, the controversy generated, the response of the environmental community, and the legal battles that continue to rage more than seven years later. It explores the value of roadless areas and why the Clinton rule was so important to environmentalists, describes the stakeholder groups involved, and takes readers into courtrooms across the country to hear critical arguments. Author Tom Turner considers the lessons learned from the controversy, arguing that the episode represents an excellent example of how the system can work when all elements of the environmental movement work together—local groups and individuals determined to save favorite places, national organizations that represent local interests but also concern themselves with national policies, members of the executive branch who try to serve the public interest but need support from outside, and national organizations that use the legal system to support progress achieved through legislation or executive action.

Book excerpt: In a day unlike any other, a multitude of refugees manages to ford the Great Western River to convince their kin to join them in the war against the First House, a dangerous new dogma that originated from a mysterious coup. After the discussion splinters into fierce arguing, all expectations are dashed. Suddenly, another cadre of refugees arrives carrying an elderly man on a stretcher. The text, known as The Eyes that Weep, recounts the grave misfortunes of Delving Eye, a high-ranking detective of the First House. Prior to the dismal events described in the narrative, Delving Eye and his companions were well-known throughout the First House as loyal, intelligent examples of their order. At the start of the new year, however, he and his cohort are forced into an emergency assignment that takes them beyond the borders of their great capitol, Kinsman Height. Dispatched to a village close to an enemy border, Delving Eye and his crew must discover why two of their military units have mysteriously vanished.
