Download or read book Fire Down Below written by Robert Harvey and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 1988 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey, a British House of Commons member and former Economist correspondent for Latin America, here provides a useful overview of the contrasting natures of the area's individual countries and people, from the primitive to sophisticated, including three distinct Indian nations, many of whose members are victims of displacement and mistreatment. More probing than most travel books, the author's acute sense of observation, analysis of complex economic and political matters and evocative prose convey not only the flavor and variety of often spectacular scenic beauty but the suffering, horror and poverty inflicted on the people by civil wars, dictators and natural disasters. In each country Harvey interviewed representatives of opposing political factions, and although he asserts that earlier U.S. involvement could have prevented or alleviated many Latin American problems, he is guardedly optimistic about the future of democracy south of the border.--Publisher's Weekly.

Download or read book Fire from the Sky written by Richard C Knott and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire from the Sky is the first complete history of the most decorated Navy squadron of the Vietnam War. Richard C. Knott tells the dramatic history of the HAL-3 Seawolves, the U.S. Navy's first and only helicopter gunship squadron of the Vietnam War. The squadron was established “in country” to support the fast, pugnacious river patrol boats of the brown water navy. Flying combat-worn Hueys borrowed from the Army, the mission of the Seawolves quickly expanded to include rapid response air support to any friendly force in the Delta needing immediate assistance. The Seawolves inserted SEALs deep into enemy territory, and extracted them, often despite savage enemy opposition. They rescued friendly combatants from almost certain capture or death, and evacuated the wounded when Medevac helicopters were not available.

Download or read book Fire From the Sky written by Robert C. Stem and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2010-03-17 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By late 1944 the war in the Pacific had turned decisively against the Japanese, and overwhelming Allied forces began to close in on the home islands. At this point Japan unveiled a terrifying new tactic: the suicide attack, or Kamikaze, named after the Divine Wind which had once before, in medieval times, saved Japan from invasion. Intentionally crashing bomb-laden aircraft into Allied warships, these piloted guided missiles at first seemed unstoppable, calling into question the naval strategy on which the whole war effort was based. This book looks at the origins of the campaign, at its strategic goals, the organization of the Japanese special attack forces, and the culture that made suicide not just acceptable, but honourable. Inevitably, much mythology has grown up around the subject, and the book attempts to sort the wheat from the chaff. One story that does stand up is the reported massive stock-piling of kamikaze aircraft for use against any Allied invasion of the home islands, if the atomic bombs had not forced Japans surrender. However, its principal focus is on the experience of those in the Allied fleets on the receiving end of this peculiarly alien and unnerving weapon how they learnt to endure and eventually counter a threat whose potential was over-estimated, by both sides. In this respect, it has a very modern resonance.

Download or read book B 36 Peacemaker Units of the Cold War written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully illustrated study into the extraordinary Convair B-36 during the Cold War. Conceived during 1941 in case Germany occupied Britain, when US bombers would then have insufficient range to retaliate, the B-36 was to be primarily a '10,000-mile bomber' with heavy defensive armament, six engines and a performance that would prevent interception by fighters. Although rapid developments in jet engine and high-speed airframe technology quickly made it obsolescent, the B-36 took part in many important nuclear test programmes. The aircraft also provided the US nuclear deterrent until the faster B-52 became available in 1955. It was one of the first aircraft to use substantial amounts of magnesium in its structure, leading to the bomber's 'Magnesium Overcast' nickname. It earned many superlatives due to the size and complexity of its structure, which used 27 miles of wiring, had a wingspan longer than the Wright brothers' first flight, equivalent engine power to 400 cars, the same internal capacity as three five-room houses and 27,000 gallons of internal fuel – enough to propel a car around the world 18 times. Much was made of the fact that the wing was deep enough to allow engineers to enter it and maintain the engines in flight. B-36s continued in the bomber and reconnaissance role until their retirement in February 1959 following 11 years in SAC. Convair employees were invited to suggest names for the giant aircraft, eliciting suggestions such as 'King Kong Bomber', 'Condor', 'Texan' and 'Unbelievable', but the most popular was 'Peacemaker'. Oddly, objections from religious groups deterred the USAF from ever adopting it officially. This fully illustrated volume includes first-hand accounts, original photographs and up to 30 profile artworks depicting in detail the complexity of this superlative aircraft.
